Yellowstone National Park - Wed 31st July

Pleasant two hour drive to West Yellowstone. Scenery spectacular. Rivers running through alpine like plains. Just stopped before I head for Old Faithful! The McDonalds here is full of Chinese workers!!! They cannot understand a word I say!! What are they doing in the middle of nowhere working in a fast food restaurant??

More to follow....

As drive towards Old Faithfull, stopped at Fountain Paint Pots and Biscuit Basin.  Its like the end of the world!!  Steam rising among petrified pine trees and a strong smell of sulphur dioxide!!

Why its called the paint pots, they look like them. There were many over a wide area.

Old Faithful was spectacular, even though had to wait a bit in the heat, but worth it! It blows every 1½ hours and goes up at least 50 feet. Remember all the visitors are kept at least 500 feet from it because the water is super heated well above boiling!! Spray can seriously burn someone.

Crossed the Continental Divide twice on the way to Grant and a glimpse of West Thumb and Yellowstone Lake,  like crater lake, but with overflows etc and huge.  This whole area is a giant caldera and you can see that.  But unlike Crater Lake, the earths crust is very thin and geothermal heat is seeping out of the surface.

Headed south over the Continental Divide yet again!! Stopped at Lewis falls which was spectacular!!

Kept heading south out of Yellowstone and into Grand Teton.  Spectacular mountains formed from a fault which rose, while the other half sank forming a lake.  Drove all the way to Moose taking pictures, then headed back up the way I came to find a camp site. On the return witnessed thunder storms and lightening over Yellowstone, but it did not rain where i was.

Mt Moran, highest peak in the Grand Tetons

Finally found a spot in Colter Bay Village. As I was so late I never paid! The attendant had gone for the night and I pitched in the dark. Stick it to the man!!

Highway 12 becomes I90 - Tues 30th July

Slept in until 7am!! Must be getting use to sleeping on the ground!! Also now in Mountain Time, so one hour closer to the UK (seven hours ahead now)

Was on the road by 8am and continued on Highway 12.  It was chilly, which was a good job as I had the heater on to continue drying my damp documents and books.

Stopped for breakfast at Lolo Hotsprings just beyond Lolo Pass, where they had internet access!! But still no phone reception.  Knew that the women in my life would be worried about me (Michelle and Vivian that means!!!)  I WhatsApped them to let them know I was ok.  Thanks Lolo Bar!!

One of the locals at Lolo Pass.  If someone can tell me what it is? Think its a Chipmunk.

At Missoula Montana, got comfortable at a McDonalds and Skyped Michelle then Abbey to wish her a happy 20th birthday.  Abbey was in a fancy hotel in the Lake District with Dan, a treat from her Mom, who was also there.  I suppose she can afford that now Chet's place is sold.

From Missoula, Highway 12 turns into I90 and as the speed limit is 75mph, I soon covered 200 miles to Butte, then a further 100 miles to Bozeman.

Just outside of Butte, I crossed the Continental Divide at 6,368 ft.  Amazing granite formations.  Stopped at a rest area just after I crossed.

Be crossing back over the Continental Divide as I head back into Yellowstone Park.

Currently in Bozeman, which seems a nice and arty town, with a trendy main street with nice bars and restaurants.  Have to remember that in the winter time this is a major ski area!

Stopped at the Ranch House Motel in Bozeman as I need a shower!! All my stuff is now dry after the ice disaster except for the three books which are still damp.  One of them is really bad, but its only water and it will dry out!!

Tomorrow I am heading for Yellowstone.  I am one day behind on my trip schedule and am thinking of modifying my journey slightly.

Highway 12 to Orofino, Idaho Monday 29th July

Continued through Walla Walla, Washington and into Idaho at Clarkston & Lewiston.  Seem to be still following Lewis and Clark's trail, but in reverse!!

Beyond Lewiston Highway 12 becomes very twisty and mountainous as it follows the Clearwater river.

I stopped at a campsite as I was leaving Orofino, (which I almost missed it was so small).  Only cost $10 and camped on the bank of the river.

My big surprise as I unpacked my tent was leaking water in the boot of the car!! The ice I bought and put in the cool bag I dragged from the UK leaked all over the boot floor and got my back pack soaking wet!!  I had three new books in the back pack and they were in a real damp state.  Plus all my documents and passports were wet.  Had everything laid out inside the car to dry out.  Was a bit worried that all this stuff was on display, but my camp site was really quiet.

Some pix of the Clearwater river at various spots I stopped at before I camped for the night

 My campsite!!
Classy campsite, you do not want to imagine the toilets or showers!! Very basic
View from my tent, not bad!! Very quiet and no phone or radio reception

Farewell Oregon

After I bought some new SD cards from Walmart in Pendleton, as well as a bag of ice (more of that later!!), I headed up Highway 12 to Walla Walla and  left Oregon. Until next time!!

Crossing the state line back into Washington as head out of Milton Freewater towards Walla Walla

Stanfield Oregon, Mon 29th July

Stopped for breakfast at a little truck stop in Stanfield Or. Nothing here but McDonalds and free wi fi!! They state the calories of the food. So breakfast is 350 today.  Won't eat again until late today.
Am outside of Pendleton, which is cowboy country.  The countryside has changed from evergreen trees and mountains, to bare hills and high plains. Lots of windfarms, probably because no nimbys!

LePage Park Oregon campsite 28th July

First campsite i have tried. Its a US Campsite. Facilities are ok for $20 for the nite.
Here is a view from my tent and my "camp"
SD card died on me when i got here. Luckily only lost todays pix of falls.
Will stop in Pendleton tomorrow for new card, then on to Walla Walla, Lewiston and try to get to Missoula by end of day.

My first campsite.  Almost blown away by gorge winds!!

Managed to rescue all the photos on the faulty SD card when I got back to UK.  They have all been added to the blog now. Consisted of photos of Jason & Holly, Vivian and Multnomah Falls.

Multnomah Falls

Took half an hour to get on the off ramp!! Worth the stop though. Walked to the top of the falls, which was quite a workout! I'm now heading for a campsite suggested by Eric at The Dalles. Pix to follow once I have rescued them off my duff SD card.

In the meantime check out Multnomah Falls on the web

Its a long way up!! See how small the people are on the bridge!

View from the top,  gulp!!

View from the top of the Columbia Gorge

The journey continues

Left Vivian and Dundee at noon. Headed to Wilsonville and Tualatin passing through where I use to work. Hopping onto I205, then I84 east down the Gorge.  Next stop Multnomah Falls.
