Downtown Seattle

Relaxing after a hard day walking up and down and around Seattle.

Managed to make it to downtown Seattle and find a parking lot by 10am.

Plenty to do here! Was parked near Pikes Market on 3rd Avenue, so walked up to the Space Needle approximately eight blocks north west!  Luckily their is a lift to the top!!

Space Needle is interesting from the engineering and sci fi perspective.  Its as old as me for starters!!

Took loads of pix and they take your picture too, before you decent 520 feet up! Had clam chowder in the restaurant for lunch.

Its a terrible pix, but so what! Next stop was Pike Place Market, home of the throwing fish guys so beloved of us academics! They were very entertaining with fish going everywhere. The market area was just my scene. Plenty of musicians playing great music and getting paid cash!! There were two really young girls playing country music outside of the first Starbucks. Never went in as there was a huge line.  Lots of hand crafted goods including a cigar box luthier!! Bought a brass slide from him.

Spent ages soaking up the atmosphere.  Amazing selection of fruit, fish and flowers. Next I headed for the Waterfront and Pioneer Square.  These the oldest parts of Seattle.  Pioneer Square seemed full of hobos and beggars, but I did discover Emerald Guitars nearby! Full of vintage instruments and amps.  They had a 59 Les Paul for sale for $250.000!! Had a female guitar tech who was working on a left handed Les Paul Gold Top from 1953. The owner plugged it in for a blast and it sounded like heaven!! There I was with another guy drooling over a plank of gold coloured mahogany topped with maple!!

I finished off my day appropriately at the Hard Rock cafe where i blew my calorie count on a very nice burger and fruit smoothie.

Now I am chillin' at Knights Inn on highway 99 in Tukwila.  Room 117 funnily enough. Those numbers often occur in my working life.

Tomorrow (18th July) driving around the Olympic Peninsular. That is going to bring back memories from the late 1980s when I last did it!

Got to go speak to my special lady now through the wonders of Skype
