Arrived in downtown Denver at around 11am. Already the temperature was hot and very humid. Park up and walk one block and find a Chase Bank, and next door to it is a tourist information shop like they have in the UK!!
I was helped almost immediately and given loads of suggestions on what to see. Once I understood how 16th Avenue works with its free bus service I decided to head to the southern end where all the galleries and government buildings are situated. Very impressed with the Art buildings. Pity I never had time to go around them. The State Capital Building was undergoing some building work and the dome was covered with scaffolding. In fact there was a considerable amount of building work going on in the city.
The stairs leading into the State Capital have the inscription "One mile above sea level"
Took pix of the library and Museum of Art etc
Wondered back up 16th Avenue and took in all the shops and restaurants. All the expected designer labels and more were present. Michelle would enjoy shopping here!!
Caught the bus up to the other end of 16th Avenue to have a look at the "Lodo" district, which is where the Coors baseball park is situated. This area is full of restored and upgraded old buildings, warehouses etc. Very trendy place to live and work!
Wondered to the Union Station, which is why Denver as a city was established. Its also covered in scaffolding, but looks like it will be great when finished.
Finally I headed towards the riverside park area. The transit light railway and electric buses run from here. The bridge steps had a groove so cyclists could push their bikes up the steps. Clever!!
Headed back to the car and decided I was going to have a look at Red Rock National Park, which has a concert venue carved out of it! Have heard of this. U2 recorded a concert here for "Rattle & Hum" movie back in the 80s.
This is where the geological rock of the Plains hits the Rocky Mountains. You can see the edge of the seams of rock!! Steve Miller Band and Doobie Bros were playing there, so I could not look in the actual ampitheatre, but you could see that a gig was being set up and soundchecks were going on!! Would love to see a gig here!! So instead I bought the tee shirt!!
As I was leaving Red Rock, it started to rain, and as I headed east down I70, I could see in the rear view mirror that the sky had darkened and it was raining hard. Hopefully the gig went on, but I bet the audience got wet!!!
Staying the night at another KOA campground, found in my new directory of KOA campsites. So I am at Limon Colorado using the wi fi and family room facilities and am now going to bed in my tent. Missing the company of Michelle, but soon she will be with me!!
Hope to get near Topeka in Kansas tomorrow. Then St Louis Missouri the next day. Getting closer to the east coast!!!
