Statue of Liberty & other tall things - Mon 19th Aug

We were up reasonably early as Michelle was on UK time still!! We met one of the bus tour sellers outside the hotel and as he was not from Africa, he gave us some good advice on how to get on a cruise around the Statue of Liberty. So we found somewhere to eat breakfast and then caught another tour bus to Pier 83 to catch a cruise around the Statue of Liberty.

The advantage of these open top buses soon became apparent, as the bus made its way from midtown to downtown Manhattan. We saw sights such as the Empire State Building, the Flat Iron Building,  SOHO and Greenwich Village, Wall Street, City Hall, the World Trade Center Memorial and Battery Park.  The tour continues up West Street, past all the old piers, where ships use to unload and load goods. Now its all done in New Jersey across the Hudson River.

New World Trade Center and other buildings near by....

USS Intrepid with museum of planes etc

 Lower Manhattan

The cruise was a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.  The only problem with our voyage was a group of noisy Italians!!

After the cruise, we caught the bus back to 5th Avenue and decided we should undertake the uptown tour, which included Central Park and bits of Harlem. It was at this stage we discovered the downside of tour buses!! Waiting for them!! We waited over an hour at the bottom of Central Park, but it was worth it!! We seemed to be the only ones waiting for the bus, but when it arrived all these foreigners turned up!!  The tour guide was great and got all the english speakers on and kept us together. He told the jibber jabberers to shut up at the front of the bus and spoke to us.

Lots of very expensive residential places from Central Park upwards
Cathedral of St John the Divine
Famed Apollo theatre in Harlem, more soul music!!!

 Museum of Natural History
Fountain in front of Central Park

Conquered the heights of the Empire State Building. Its very impressive inside.  Wonderful art deco design.  We went to both observation levels at the 86th floor and 109th floor.  I am not too keen on heights, but this was impressive.  The only thing higher was then new World Trade Center building.
