Monticello & Skyline Drive - Thurs 15th Aug

My final day of travel on my own.

Was up early and left the KOA campsite at Charlottesville at around 9:30 and headed for Thomas Jefferson's house at Monticello.

Idea is to spend most of the day at Monticello, then head up the Skyline Drive in Shanendoah National Park. Am aiming to camp one last time at one of the campsites in the park.

That will give me plenty of time Friday to reach Andrew's place in Silver Spring, outside of DC.Its been quite a journey!!

Blog is a bit of a mess. Need to add pix from Nashville onwards and update written areas too.

More to follow!!  Michelle is here in three days time!!

Its 2pm and just had an interesting tour around Jeffersons pad on a nice hill overlooking some lovely countryside. Amazing what you can do with some free labour!!

It was a beautiful day and the guide was very informative.  A really interesting place. They did not gloss over the slave issue at all.

Jefferson's final resting place. He lived well into his eighties!

A view of University of Virginia's dome designed by Jefferson from Monticello

Heading for Skyline Drive now...

Back on the road, heading to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is the start (end!?) of the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park at mile post 105.

Not long before I am over 3,000 feet above the valley.  I stopped at McCormick Gap, Calf Mtn & Swift Run overlooks with the intention of covering half the drive that day.

Stopped at Big Meadow, a well managed Forestry Service campsite which has its own deer!! As well as Black Bears!!
Campsite B106, my final night in a tent!!

Deer photographed from in front of the car!! Right in the middle of the campground!!

There was a nice diner near by and a shop/visitor centre and the weather continued to be in the 70s with no humidity. Perfect.
